Casarnos (Getting Married)

Hoy me caso.

Y finalmente, casarnos significa trabajar. Somos mejores juntos.

Today I'm getting married. I'm in love with my girl and we're very happy together, but that's not the main reason for this. I'm not the type of person who was seeking marriage. When I was a kid I did think of getting married and having children, but that was when I didn't think for myself yet, it was more because I saw typical stereotypes and thought that those tendencies would come by naturally. Little by little realized there was not only one way of doing things, of living life; but most importantly, I realized I had different options and I could choose whatever I wanted and didn't have to ask anyone; and then i decided that i would never get married if i wasn't sure and confident that i should marry someone.

Nevertheless I'm getting married, but because I feel totally comfortable with my girl. Because we have plans for the future and it comes handy to have that little piece of paper that says we have a commitment. Because legally it's convenient for us to be married. And because before society, it looks better when you have a formal relationship. All these reasons helped me make the decision, but none of them is the main reason.

Because getting married means way more than the legal paper. The process to get married is so easy that it doesn't mean that much (though most people think it does). Being married does not mean being maturer per se. Any aspect of marriage that can make you seem more mature does not imply being married. You can be responsible without being married, you can sustain a family, you can love, correspond, have children, etc. without being married. But it is the commitment that cannot be singed in a paper the one that really matters. Nobody will go to your house to check if you've being breaking your vows or not; marriage is a commitment of two, and only two.  Getting married implies certain security. The security of having someone beside us to face life: the good things and the bad. Knowing that we won't be alone for the difficult times, and knowing that we have someone to share the happy times. Getting married is looking beyond oneself, and beyond what you can physically see. Is valuing what really lasts. In the end, I want to be with someone with whom I can drink a cup of coffee and talk about the events, important or not, that could happen in our lives.

And finally, getting married means working for it. Every day. Making sure that we don't get bored. The commitment doesn't arrive on magical day after which everything comes down hill. The commitment needs to be renewed everyday, like everything in our lives. You are not husband or wife only at times. Getting married means to take care of each other and to create reasons to fall in love with each other all the time. Because every relationship worth having needs maintenance. And after thinking of all this, we are getting married today. Because we know we are happier together. We are better together.

Caminando juntos (Walking together)

Encontré alguien a quien amo y me ama.

No me interesa estar casado.

It's been a while since I realized that it was not worth worrying about finding a girlfriend, falling in love, being with someone or not ending alone. I even thought about the possibility of never finding someone with whom to feel at ease and fullfilled. I feel very well without those prejudices about the married life or the lonely life. I began to pay more attention to the words of "better alone than in bad company" or what Robin Williams said "I used to think that the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It's not. The worst thing in life is ending up with people who make you feel all alone". I am convinced that in order to find someone worth being with, I first had to understand that it is necessary to be able to be happy by myself. If you can't be happy on your own,  you might be able to find happiness with someone else, but your happiness will always depend on another person. I do not think my happiness should be out of my control. If you can be happy all by yourself, then when you find someone you want be with, it is easier to be happy and make someone happy, because you are not with that person out of necessity, but because you really want to be with that someone. I finally found someone I want to be with and with whom I want to share my life.

I found someone whom I love and who loves me. With whom I was able to establish a relationship with our own rules and without clichés. Nobody pressured us to do anything we didn't want to do, and we did not follow social traditions when we didn't think they fitted us. When the judge asks me if I came spontaneously and by my own free will, I will say yes with confidence because that is absolutely true. I had never felt so free in a relationship. The complement did not limit or affect the other part, but it simply shared and enjoy the company of imperfect companion; and thats exactly how it was wanted, imperfect.

The desire to share experiences, time, space. Knowing that to achieve a life worth living, work and enjoyment is needed in order to give  ourselves generously to each other. As it is all we have, ourselves; everything else are figments of our imagination. That's why we fully give ourselves, to feel alive. Because only we matter. We. What a beautiful word. It is no longer I, it is no longer her. And yet, what makes us special is that we can each walk our way holding hands. Walking together.

So today is a different day. Because I'm giving a big step in my life. But I won't give it alone, maybe for the first time. And I want to keep walking accompanied. But not for the sake of being accompanied, but because I want to be with her. I do not want to be married. I want to marry her. And so today I'm going to ask my girlfriend to marry me.
